The history of Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble is the largest book retailer in the United States. They have 640 stores and operate in all 50 states. Their first store opened in 1917. Today, it's a Fortune 500 company, and also has games, music, and gifts available for purchase.

Barnes & Noble is named after its founders although they became owners at different times. After the bookstore industry in the U.S. went through a tough time, Barnes & Noble remained the only chain of bookstores that is still open.

For 7 years, a thief managed to get away from stealing merchandise from Barnes & Noble.

The robber turned out to be Dominick J. Izzo, a 49-year-old man from Florida. He nabbed $200,000 worth of stuff from 2007 to 2014 before getting caught.

How did he get away with it? He used a “booster bag”, which is a bag lined with layers of aluminum foil that prevents security scanners from picking up signals from any electronic sensors.

After getting away with the items, Izzo sold them on eBay using screen names so he couldn’t be identified. According to his PayPal records, the money from his sales added up to $207,646, quite a tidy profit considering he didn’t pay for any of the items.

Izzo was eventually caught when the postal service got suspicious about the packages he was sending. Maybe he can use his time in prison to catch up on some reading.
